The 1975-2000 Era:

In 1975, two boyhood friends, Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The name “Microsoft” was a combination of “microcomputer” and “software”.

Microsoft didn’t get their “booming” till 1980, when IBM approached Microsoft to develop an operating system for their new personal computer, the IBM-PC, which resulted in the creation of a MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System).

This agreement with IBM was a major turning point for Microsoft, as it gave them recognition and established them as a major player in the software industry.

In 1985, IBM requested Microsoft to develop a new operating system for their computers called OS/2. Microsoft produced that operating system, but also continued to sell their own alternative, which proved to be in direct competition with OS/2.

Microsoft did release a software suite in 1983 called Microsoft Word, which was later integrated into Microsoft Office.

The start of Office:

The first version of Microsoft Office, known as Office 1.0, was released in 1990 for Windows operating systems. It included applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In 1995, Office added new features like Publisher, and programs received a change to version numbers to match that of Office, which was designated by year (Office 95). The year after 1996, Microsoft added Office Assistant and made user interface additions to Word. And lastly in 1999, Office 2000 improved user experience and security.

The 2000-2023 Era:
